Accessibility Statement

Effective date: June 1, 2026 · Last reviewed: June 1, 2026

Memoria is committed to ensuring that our platform is accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We believe that honoring the memory of loved ones should be possible for all, regardless of ability. This statement describes our current accessibility status and how to get help.

1. Our Commitment

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA across all pages and features of memoriahq.com. These guidelines — published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) — describe best practices for making web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities.

2. Technical Specifications

Memoria relies on the following technologies for accessibility conformance:

  • HTML5 with semantic markup
  • WAI-ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes for dynamic content
  • CSS for visual presentation, with text-based fallbacks
  • JavaScript (React / Next.js) for interactive features

Our site is designed to be compatible with assistive technologies including screen readers (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver), keyboard navigation, and high-contrast display modes.

3. Measures We Have Taken

  • Skip-to-main-content link at the top of each page for keyboard users.
  • All images include descriptive alt text, or are marked as decorative (alt="") where appropriate.
  • Interactive elements (buttons, links, form fields) are accessible via keyboard with clear focus indicators.
  • ARIA labels on icon-only buttons and controls.
  • ARIA roles and attributes on modal dialogs, tab panels, and dynamic content regions.
  • Color contrast ratios meet or exceed WCAG AA requirements (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and UI components).
  • Form inputs have associated visible labels.
  • Error messages are programmatically associated with their corresponding fields.
  • Audio and video content can be controlled by keyboard.

4. Known Limitations

While we strive for full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance, some areas are works in progress:

  • Interactive life map: the Leaflet-based life map has limited screen reader support. We are evaluating alternatives. Map information is also available via the Life Timeline section.
  • Audio player: our custom audio player supports keyboard play/pause and scrubbing, but may not announce time changes to all screen readers. We are working to improve ARIA live region support.
  • User-submitted content: photos and media uploaded by users may not include alt text. We encourage contributors to add captions to all uploaded media.
  • Legacy pages: older memorial pages may have content inherited from obituary sources that does not fully meet accessibility standards.

5. Feedback and Contact

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of Memoria. If you encounter barriers that prevent you from accessing any part of our site, or if you need the content in an alternative format, please contact us:

Memoria Accessibility Team

Email: accessibility@memoriahq.com

We aim to respond to accessibility requests within 5 business days.

When contacting us, please describe the barrier you encountered, the page URL, and the assistive technology you are using (if applicable). This helps us reproduce and resolve the issue more quickly.

6. Formal Complaints

If you are dissatisfied with our response, you may contact your national or regional disability rights authority. In the United States, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice (ADA National Network) or the U.S. Access Board.

7. Continuous Improvement

We review this statement and our site's accessibility at least annually. We are actively working to address known limitations and to incorporate accessibility into our development process from the outset. Our goal is full WCAG 2.1 AA conformance across all features.
